Life is funny sometimes, here is how experience works. First you get the test, afterward you learn the lesson.

My very good laptop went out almost a year ago. It was 2 years old. The wifi stopped working on it. I have built several computers, been a beta tester of Ozwin, and Compuserve, and consider myself to be a few cuts above the average computer user.

I have been researching this problem for the whole year. Looking, googling, picking brains. I just was not going to take it to a computer shop. I could not find the problem. It is an Acer 5000, the wifi going out is a known issue.

Since I am taking my new laptop out of town of the next few weeks, and my children need a computer, I thought I'd give it yet another shot. So, I found the charger to the laptop, after a week of searching, my wife had put it in the closet. She is a stuffer, with anything left out, and the charger got stuffed. Back to the story, I googled around again, found people discussing the same problem, again. I found more solutions.

In my googling around today, I saw a solution that I had not seen. It went like this. "There are two clear buttons on the front of the laptop, to the right of the 3 AV ports. Push the one on the left, and enjoy your wifi." Ahem, the button is the wifi switch, it physically turns off the wifi card. It has been turned off for a year. I bought a new laptop over this invisible-to-me switch.

Test failed when new computer was purchased, lesson learned a year later. Good thing that I am a packrat of sorts, and anally curious.
