I like to think that doing it myself is rewarding. so with that being said I want to make my own Bowie knife and sheath. for the knife I was wanting to know what kind of steel I should use. also when I make the sheath for the knife, how can I tan a deer hide with household materials. I don't want to buy a kit or pay someone to do it. if I can't do that then I don't have a problem buying a kit. last is if and where I can buy wholesale leather to work with. really anything helps out. thanks in advance

Not real sure about knife help but if you go to the web and pull up alleycatscratch.com/lotr/weapons/scabbard.htm
You will get some great info on exactly where to start and what to do and where to get supplies, Good luck and if you finish one (and I know you will) post it here and let us all see.

I just went there myself. The site is all about sheaths for knives as you requested.

Try to help a new guy and all you get is grief. I assure you, if you put it in exactly as I gave to you, you will get the info you were hunting for. Thanks cheez for the back up. Maybe new guy doesn't understand that this site is all about helping each other. Try again camo

I didn't mean to offend you and I applaud your effort. when I typed it in exactly like it was it wasn't anything about knife sheaths. it was about making your own costumes or something. I may be mistaken and I'm sorry for calling you a jerk I understand I was asking for help and I thought it was a joke.

Thanks for the apology. If that is what you came up with, then I guesss you have a right to get a little hostile. Now, lets start all over again. Type in every thing I gave you. Of course it will start with WWW. then alleycatscratch.com but DO NOT STOP HERE. Go on and put the rest of the address as I sent it to you. You just left out the most important part of the address. Hope it works this time.

Well there camo, did you ever find the scabbard info?? If not try this one more time. Instead of going to the address bar, go to the search area and type alley cat scratch scabbards This takes me to the complete list with a whole ton of helpful info on making scabbards and knife. I use Yahoo but any search engine should come up with the same info/

Good Luck

Here is a very good tutorial on how to make a leather knife sheath if that is what you wanted.

http://www.beebeknives.com/html/make_a_sheath_tutorial.html

As to knife steels. That is a very subjective and personal choice. Different steels will work well for different purposes. Try here for a basic overview of what steel is good for what. It may help you decide on which one to use.

http://zknives.com/knives/articles/knifesteelfaq.shtml

Here is another excellent explanation.

http://sharpeningmadeeasy.com/steels.htm

The best way I have found to follow a link is to copy and paste it into your URL line/browser address.

Rob

I have been around a few good knife makers. Most of them, in a metal shop where I worked as an apprentice. Leaf springs from trucks are great for knifes, if you have the roll forming equipment to flatten it out. Files also work well. I have made a few from heavy saw blades as well. My favorite, and one that I still own, someone made from a railroad spike. Good luck.
